DELIVERING HOPE for the Tovar Family

The Tovar family – who recently made a huge stride in securing a 1-bedroom apartment, after being homeless for nearly 8 months – was the recipient of The Good Deed Project's Delivering Hope pilot project in November 2024. The project's focus was in part an ADA retrofit while also alleviating some major pain points making the family's home more accessible and comfortable for Alexandra (13), who has Cerebral Palsy, a disease affecting a person’s ability to move, balance, and maintain posture; and her mother.

“There are no words to express my appreciation... You are angels in my life. God gives us special children and at the same time, He places the right people in our lives to help us through the struggle.” - Sylvia

The project execution was completed in one 12-hour day, although taking 33 days of planning, preparation, and urgent procurement. â€‹Valued at $15,460, the newly designed functional storage and ADA solutions not only resulted in a home that is safer and more comfortable but also better meeting the spoken and unspoken needs of a family living in a one bedroom apartment whose mom struggles with the basic tasks involved in caring for her 13-year-old daughter: getting her out of bed, bathing, and feeding her before school.

IMPACT

  • Maximized space throughout home and created additional storage space by building a floating nightstand, over-the-toilet shelving, storage closet and refurbishing dressers

  • Safeguarded future slips and injuries by installing disability-friendly plumbing and seating fixtures in the bathroom

  • Brought family and friends together for meals by designing an adjustable, wheelchair friendly dining table where Alexandra now has a seat

  • Essential chores streamlined by cleaning, sorting, and reorganizing areas throughout the home

  • Alexandra’s liquid diet and household food prep simplified and improved by providing a Vitamix-type blender, kitchen supplies, utensils and other missing appliances

  • Minimizing significant pain and injury to mother and daughter when moving from bed to bath or bathing to dressing along with other daily movements, we provided a transport lift chair, adjustable medical bed, recliner, and mat

  • With compassion and attention to the details, we warmed up the home with new bedding, lighting, decor, a 55” TV, antenna for local stations, DVD player, some family friendly DVDs, and a decorated Christmas tree

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

$10K BUILDING HOPE Sponsor

Bobby Panaro’s generosity has once again helped in changing another family's life with a $10,000 Building Hope Sponsorship. After witnessing the incredible impact of his previous Building Hope contribution for the Velasquez brothers home renovation, he partnered with The Good Deed Project to provide an urgent home retrofit for Sylvia and Alexandra just in time for Christmas, Ale’s favorite holiday! Bobby’s gift will have a lasting, positive impact on the Tovar Family's journey of living with critical health conditions and disabilities. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to helping improve the lives of those who have nowhere else to turn.

Our goal has always been to cover the basic needs of our families — in this case, providing solutions making it easier for Sylvia, the mom, to get her daughter out of bed or into the bath by providing an adjustable medical bed, lift chair, shower seat and mobile shower head; refurbishing a dresser and cabinet along with new built-ins creating more space; delivering and setting up kitchen appliances and much needed supplies such as bedding, decor, TV, antenna, DVD player, and DVDs. Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, community partners and volunteers, we were able to go above and beyond by providing some electronic solutions, a decorated Christmas tree, personalized decor for mother and daughter including a collage made with some of Alexandra’s favorite items.

Please feel free to share this newsletter with friends who may want to help in Delivering Hope to others like the Tovar family.

Thank you,
